Best investor research platforms in 2026
Updated 23 Oct 2026
Compared on what a writer can quote and check again later. Other sites read on 5 September 2026.
The other two lists ask what each site covers. This one asks what a reader can quote from it and check again a year later. We read the eleven other sites on 5 September 2026 without an account. The columns are the five things a quoted number needs, plus access and price: a page of its own that stays put, the date the file was counted, a citation line to copy, written counting rules, and the change since the previous count. Two entries print a date beside a count, and one of them publishes this page. Counts here come from the file dated 23 October 2026.

The entries
1. FundingWatcher
Six figures have a page each: 24,254 venture capital firms, 23,916 angel investors, investors headquartered in 5,219 cities, 166,525 funded startups, 19,147 companies whose most recent round falls in the last 12 months, and 1,063 companies valued at a billion dollars or more. A figure page prints the value, the file date, the change since the previous snapshot once two exist, the segment table behind the number, and the citation line filled in: According to FundingWatcher (fundingwatcher.com), 24,254 venture capital firms. /method/ states what each count leaves out, including that 31,384 of 79,515 entries carry no website and so carry no team count. The URL does not move when the number does.
2. NFX Signal
NFX Signal prints a count and a date together, which nothing else free here does: 3,191 marketplace seed investors, updated 09/03/26, read on 5 September 2026. That is second place on a list about quoting. The rest is missing. The count sits on a browsing page rather than on a page of its own, no statement says what an investor list includes or excludes, there is no change since the previous count, and a signup stands between a reader and the page.

3. Dealroom
Dealroom's reports are dated, downloadable and written to be quoted, which is more than most subscriptions manage. We could not read dealroom.co on 5 September 2026, so the row is check apart from the price its pricing page states, 12,600 euros a year. The problem a citation runs into is the PDF: a number inside a report has no URL of its own, and a reader checking it next year has to find the same report and the same page again.

4. CB Insights
CB Insights publishes research openly and often, and the briefs are the most quotable free writing on this list. The numbers inside them are not pages. A brief states a figure in a sentence, with no data date for the file behind it, no rules for what was counted, and nothing to point a link at except the article itself. The pricing page states coverage of 12 million private companies and no price.

5. Preqin
Preqin publishes research summaries openly and its numbers reach the press regularly. The pages we read on 5 September 2026 carried no count with a data date, no method note and no price for Preqin Pro. A reader who wants to check a Preqin figure has to take the summary's word for it or buy access to the file underneath, which is the ordinary arrangement for allocator data and a poor one for a writer.

6. VC Sheet
VC Sheet is the easiest site on this list to read: no account, plain pages, counts printed on the sheets. It also says plainly that it is curated, which is the honest description of a hand built list. For a citation that means the number is one person's list on one day, with no date printed on it and no note when funds are added or dropped.

7. Tracxn
Tracxn puts its coverage numbers on the pricing page, 7.7 million companies and 290,000 investors, and behind a free signup there are sector and company pages. Neither the coverage numbers nor the pages carry the date the crawl was cut, and the site publishes no counting rules. A number lifted from a Tracxn page today is unlikely to match the same page in six months, with nothing on the page to say what changed.

8. Crunchbase
Crunchbase is cited more than anything else on this list, usually as a profile page. crunchbase.com returned 403 to us on 5 September 2026, so the row reads check. The citation problem with a profile is that it keeps its URL while its contents change: a total raised quoted in 2024 is not the total on the page today, and the page records nothing about what it said before.

9. PitchBook
PitchBook figures appear in newspapers weekly. The pages behind them were not readable to us at all, 403 on 5 September 2026 from every path we tried, which is why the row is check rather than a judgement. For a reader without a seat, a PitchBook citation is a claim about a number rather than a link to one.

10. OpenVC
OpenVC states a price, 99 dollars a month, and states its database sizes, 12,000 investors and 10,000 limited partners. Neither number sits on a page built for a citation: no date, no rule for what counts as an investor in the list, no history. The site is built for a founder working through a list and does not present itself as a source of measured numbers.

11. Growth List
Growth List states 10,000 funding announcements, 107 countries and 400 billion dollars tracked, all as product claims on a pricing page that starts at 29 dollars a month. There is no method statement to check a figure against and no data date. Sample reports are readable without an email, which is more than several subscriptions here offer, and a sanitised sample is still not a number a writer can cite.

12. Harmonic
Harmonic publishes nothing a reader can quote. The pricing page is a demo form, the product pages describe what the software does without stating coverage, and no count of companies, founders or investors appeared anywhere we could reach on 5 September 2026.
