Investor research platforms in 2026: how to access one

Worked example: seed investors. Data as of 23 October 2026.

This walk starts from an investment stage rather than a place or a type, and ends on the page a citation should point at. Seed is the example, the largest of the 13 stages. Each step prints the number it produces, and all of them come from the file dated 23 October 2026.

Step 1. Open the stage page

/investors/stage/seed-investors/ prints the count above the table and lists the top 100 by recorded investments. Seed is the largest stage in the file by a wide margin: the next two are early stage venture at 35,284 and private equity at 12,036.

Stage on this side of the site belongs to the investor, not to the company. It is the stage the source records for that entry, so a firm listed at seed and late stage venture shows up on both pages with the same row.

50,175 investors write cheques at seed.

Step 2. Read the split by investor type

The types block on the stage page shows what those investors are: 22,379 angel investors, 13,346 venture capital firms, 5,333 investment partners, 2,485 accelerators, 2,241 private equity firms. They add to more than 50,175, because an entry can carry several types and is counted on each.

22,379 of the seed investors are angel investors, 13,346 are venture capital firms.

Step 3. Compare the stage against the others

Each of the 13 stages has its own page under /investors/stage/: early stage venture 35,284, private equity 12,036, venture 11,030, late stage venture 10,427, debt 3,003. An investor appears on every stage page it carries, so the column is not a partition of the file.

Two stages compare cleanly, because both come out of the same file on the same date under the same rule. A count taken from another site was cut on another date under rules that are usually not published, so it does not.

10,427 investors write cheques at late stage venture, against 50,175 at seed.

Step 4. Find where they sit

Among seed investors the cities run San Francisco 3,261, New York 3,082, London 2,240. The file records 5,219 cities and 167 countries in all. 6,595 seed investors carry no country at all, and those entries are absent from every city and country count on the site.

3,261 seed investors in San Francisco, 2,240 in London.

Step 5. Move to the figure page

A citation should point at a figure page rather than at a list page. /data/investors-by-city/ prints the value, the unit, the file date, the change since the previous snapshot once two exist, the city table behind the number, and the citation line filled in. The URL stays put when the value changes, so a link made today still resolves to the same number's page next year.

Six figures have a page: funded startups, rounds in the last 12 months, unicorns, venture capital firms, angel investors and cities with investors. /data/ lists all six with their current values.

Investors are headquartered in 5,219 cities.

Step 6. Read the method page before quoting

/method/ states what the file contains, how each count is made and what the figures cannot say. It is short enough to read in full, and the four lines below are the ones that change how a seed number should be worded.

79,515 entries, 31,384 of them without a website.

What the counting rules say

Quoted from /method/ as written there.

  • An investor is counted once per type and once per stage it carries, so type and stage counts add up to more than 79,515.
  • Figures are counted from the investor file and the startup file by the code that writes the dated snapshots under data/snapshots.
  • An investor with no published location is absent from every location count.
  • A count of recorded investments counts what the source records, not every investment made.

The second line is why a figure page and a list page cannot disagree: the snapshot and the page are written by the same code reading the same file.

Method

How to cite a page

Both forms are printed on the site. The first is the general one from /method/, the second is the line the figure page prints ready to copy.

What this cannot answer

A stage page says who invests at a stage, not how much they put in, when they last did it or into what. Cheque sizes, fund sizes and deal terms are not carried, and neither are portfolio lists. The stage on an investor entry is the stage the source records for the investor, not a stage read off recent rounds, so an investor that stopped writing seed cheques years ago is still counted under seed until the source drops it.

Quoting a count is fine with a link back to the page it came from.
