Method
We searched Google for venture capital statistics, VC statistics, VC funding statistics and how many VC firms are there, read the statistics pages that ranked, and traced each number to the organisation that produced it: NVCA and PitchBook, Crunchbase, KPMG, Carta, Dealroom, VC Lab, Atomico and an NBER survey of venture capitalists. We checked every quote against the producer's page on September 24, 2026. NVCA and PitchBook pages block automated reads, so we checked those against archive.org copies. Producers count differently: Crunchbase, Dealroom and KPMG each give a different total for the same year, so every sentence names who counted. The four FundingWatcher numbers come from its investor file of 79,515 investors, built from public investor profiles, data as of September 15, 2026. A venture capital firm is any record whose investor type includes venture capital; micro VC funds and corporate venture arms are separate types and not counted. Investment counts are the ones recorded on those profiles, so firms that disclose few deals look less active than they are.
