1 in 9 of Product Hunt's top launches from 2015 to 2018 later raised money. Ten are now unicorns, Scale AI the biggest

We took the most upvoted Product Hunt launch of every day from 2015 to 2018, the same 1,461 launches we checked in 40% of Product Hunt's top launches still run on their domain, and looked up each launch's domain in Crunchbase. 161 of them, 11.0%, have a funding round dated after the day they topped Product Hunt. The 95% interval is 9.4% to 12.6%.

Ten of the 161 are on our unicorn list. Scale, a 2016 launch with 2,537 upvotes, has raised $15.9 billion, more than half of the $29.8 billion the 161 have raised in total.

We expected the upvote count to say a lot about who raised. It says little. Launches with under 500 upvotes raised at 9.4%, launches with 2,000 or more at 14.5%, and that top group has only 76 launches.

The ten unicorns

Source: FundingWatcher, November 2026. Funding is Crunchbase's total over all rounds, including any before the launch.

Launch Year Upvotes Total raised Last round
Scale 2016 2,537 $15.9B Corporate round, 2025
The Boring Company 2017 3,969 $3.9B Series D, 2026
Neuralink 2017 3,493 $1.3B Venture round, 2026
UberFreight 2016 713 $1.1B Private equity, 2021
Andela 2016 902 $381M Series E, 2021
TrueLayer 2017 366 $349M Venture round, 2026
Lattice 2016 780 $330M Series F, 2022
Paddle 2015 504 $318M Debt, 2025
Flo Health 2018 215 $276M Corporate round, 2026
Pilot 2017 1,197 $172M Venture round, 2022

Three of the ten were not founders launching a product. The Boring Company and Neuralink are Elon Musk companies, and UberFreight is an Uber unit. That leaves seven unicorns from founder launches, about 1 in 200 of the top launches.

Flo Health is the outlier on upvotes: 215 was enough to top its day in our copy, the lowest count of the ten.

Larger rounds than the unicorns, and what happened after

Below the unicorns, Petal (2017, 2,262 upvotes) raised $993 million and was bought by Empower in 2024. Alpaca's trading API (2018, 313 upvotes) has raised $764 million. Asana topped its day in 2015 with 3,037 upvotes, seven years after Crunchbase says it was founded.

Of the 161:

Outcome in Crunchbase Launches
Operating 143
Acquired (also counted as operating or closed) 26
Closed 8
No status 10

The acquired ones include Coda (bought by Grammarly), Gatsby (Netlify) and Zenly (Snapchat, now listed as closed). The best funded of the closed ones is Tally, which raised $172 million, with its last round in October 2022.

Most of the 161 stayed small. 56 last raised a pre-seed, seed or angel round, and 54 got as far as a named Series A or later. Of the 114 with a disclosed total, the median is $19.3 million.

By year

Launch year Top launches Raised after launch Share
2015 365 39 10.7%
2016 366 52 14.2%
2017 365 35 9.6%
2018 365 35 9.6%

2016 is higher by about 4.5 points, close to two standard errors on 365 launches a year. It also holds four of the ten unicorns.

By upvotes

Upvotes Top launches Raised after launch Share
under 500 523 49 9.4%
500 to 999 586 69 11.8%
1,000 to 1,999 276 32 11.6%
2,000 or more 76 11 14.5%

How we counted

The launches and their domains come from our copy of Product Hunt, as described in the earlier post. We matched each domain exactly against the domain field of our Crunchbase copy (1.72 million organisations), read on 5 November 2026. 451 of the 1,461 domains are in Crunchbase, and 252 of those have at least one funding round.

From the 252 we dropped 56: matches whose domain now belongs to someone else, is parked, serves gambling or no longer resolves (our October 2026 check), and companies Crunchbase says were founded more than a year after the launch, which are new owners of the name. Of the remaining 196, 23 had their last round on or before launch day, so they raised before Product Hunt but not after. 12 more had a grant, accelerator support or a crowdfunded pre-sale as their most recent round, and we left them out. That leaves 161.

Crunchbase gives us the date of a company's latest round, not of every round, so "raised after launch" means the latest round falls after launch day. The 11% is a floor: a startup that moved to a new domain, or that Crunchbase does not list, counts as not having raised.
